Once again it is Pow Wow time in the mile high city. The 33nd annual Denver March Pow Wow will take place March 23 through 25 at the Denver Coliseum. Considered one of the largest and most prestigious Pow Wow's in the country this event attracts hundreds of drum and dance contestants from a multitude of tribes nation wide.
Thousands of Indian and non-Indian spectators will converge at the three day extravaganza to enjoy Native American arts and crafts, demonstrations, storytelling, foods and competitive drumming and dancing.
The Aurora Fox Theater, 9900 E. Colfax Ave.,will pay tribute to March Pow Wow with a mini Pow Wow concert from noon until 1 p.m. March 21. This special event will combine Aztec dancing, storytelling and feature the Seven Falls Singers and Dancers in an hour long showcase of historic and cultural performances.
Pow Wows gatherings celebrated since the late 1800's have become the signature event for Native Americans culture. It is here that the rich and varied cultural heritage of the indigenous tribes of the Americas can bee seen and experienced first hand.
Carrie Howell
of the Seven Falls Dancers and Singers and youth coordinator for Denver Family Resource Center said, "Pow Wow is a wonderful opportunity for native and non Indian youth to gather to together to experience the culture of Native Americans. We forget sometimes, by getting caught up in our everyday lives, that the Native American culture is a living and breathing culture. It is good for our youth, native and non-native to experience the traditions. The Colorado Folk Arts Council by sponsoring this pre-event at the Aurora Fox gives the community at large a little taste and history of what Pow Wow is. Hopefully it will encourage many to attend the bigger event and give those who would not normally go a chance to experience Pow Wow culture."
For more information on the free Aurora Fox Pow Wow, call 720-329-0869. Reservations are required for parties of ten or more.
