With gas prices going through the roof, the cost of driving to work or to the shopping mall is taking a big bite of family budgets. Two automobile holidays are just around the corner and offer an opportunity to leave that expensive gas guzzler at home.
Thursday, June 19 th is National "Dump the Pump Day" supported by transit authorities across the country including our own RTD
.
Wednesday, June 25 th is "Bike to Work Day" sponsored by the Denver Regional Council of Governments and supported by Bicycle Aurora, The City of Aurora, Treads Bicycle Outfitters and others.
Transportation options abound if you look for alternative ways to get around. Commuting on RTD buses and light rail are designed to be convenient and affordable.
The extra walk to the nearest bus stop not only starts your day with a little fresh air, but is great exercise. Bus routes frequently can take you to your destination or you can transfer to the light rail line at Parker Road and I-225.
With light rail, popular destinations like Park Meadows or Downtown Denver are smooth ride away.
Riding your bicycle is also a good option for those that enjoy the extra exercise and health benefits. Choosing a good safe route to work, preferably along city trails or through neighborhoods, will keep a bike riding commuter off the busier streets while providing a refreshing ride to work.
Another option is to take your bike on the bus or light rail train so that it can reduce your walk at either end of the commute.
Colorado has great weather. Take advantage of alternate modes of transportation for leaving the car at home, save some money and even help reduce your carbon footprint.
Give bus and light rail a try on June 19 th and take your bicycle on June 25 th for something different on your daily commute.
