Dancers from the Martin Percival School of Irish Dance kicked off the Saint Patrick's Day Season with back-to-back performances at Southlands' McCabe's Pub. "It's a wee early," said Martin Percival, Director, "but for Irish dance schools, the entire month of March is green."
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday brunch, patrons of the pub clapped to jigs and reels performed by some of the area's top Irish Dancers. Among the dancers were three World Qualifiers, four National Champions, and several regional champion dancers. The highlight of the evening was an a cappella piece danced by the champion boy dancers. In unison, three teenage boys shuffled and stamped through the crowds as pub-goers clapped and cheered (and of course, sipped Guinness and Harp). Said one customer, "I have never seen this 'Riverdance' stuff up close! It IS as hard as I thought!"
Weavingthrough the Irish dance troupe weredancersranging from ages 6 to 56. Peter Hebert, an adult Irish dancer, says that Irish dancing is for all ages--it is great exercise. Grace Edwards, and 8-year old dancer, says she "feels like her feet are wings" as she flies across the floor.
The Martin Percival School of Irish Dance will be performing at different venues throughout the entire month of March. The funds raised by performances will be used to pay for world class Irish dance competition to be held here in the Fall. Percival says, "the competition this Fall will bring in some of the finest Irish dancers in the country--and the great part is that everyone in Colorado can come and enjoy the dancing and festivities."
