Patriotism alive and well in Mission Viejo!
Contributed by: Christine Zipps on 7/8/2008

What do "patriotified" ( new word) bikes, Polynesian dancers, hot dogs, tongue draggin' canines, flippin' frogs and fire trucks have in common? You're right! They all contributed to make the Fifth Annual Mission Viejo, Independence Day Celebration and July 4th Picnic a resounding success again this year!

All organized by veteran ringleader and event planner extraordinaire, Lori Underwood, the celebration just had to be the best ever so far. All the favorite features from past years were present, including the parade of walkers and riders on festooned bikes, circling the park in front of the judges; the hundreds of hot dogs, slurpies and cotton candified (another new word) faces; jumping castle; batting cage; political and scout booths; fire and emergency equipment generously donating time, offering tours to interested folks.

And, as if that isn't enough, over stimulation was no doubt flirted with when a vivacious and dapper Uncle Sam stilt walker ( Matt Bergman) was joined by a lovely dance exhibition by the Polynesian Party Planners and the Kalama Polynesian Dance Group of Aurora. The cherry on this red, white and blue cakecamewitha stunning air show -- an Air National Guard, flyby of F-16s.

All this was happening under a growing heat befitting the occasion - firecracker hot! But, even though the patriotic costumes were no doubt a little warm, it didn't seem to wilt the spirits for smiles of all ages were everywhere. I swear I even heard the Good Samaritan mascot (a very fancy, bespeckled chicken) the send forth a few extra clucks...

What a wonderful start to a festive holiday weekend! I am certain I speak for us all when I extend hearty thanks to all volunteers, sponsors and participants who blended enthusiasm with pride and hard work to pull off another great event - let's do this again, same time, same place, next year, what say, Lori & Company?

The Good Samaritan Pet Adoption Center was pleased to have been invited to the Mission Viejo Fourth of July event again this year. We had several dogs and kittens for adoption and one of the kitties went to a new home that day! To see more Good Samaritan animals for adoption go to goodsamaritanpetcenter.org or come and visit our booth at Tagawa Garden's Grey Kitty Birthday Party this Saturday and Sunday!

Great review of the event! It was my pleasure to help put it together again this year. One correction - Henrietta the Chicken is the mascot of Plains Conservation Center - and yes, she's a real hoot! The Good Samaritan booth had all the cats and dogs needing homes. Thanks go out to the community for joining us and to all the volunteers and sponsors who made our free celebration possible!
