"
We need safer bicycle routes and better bicycle parking facilities on the Fitzsimons Biomedical campus", said bicycle commuters at a Thursday night meeting.
Bicycle Aurora hosted the first meeting of cyclists on Fitzsimons to get comments on how City and campus planners could make bicycle commuting safer and more convenient. By 2010, it is expected that
34,000 employees and students will be commuting to the Fitzsimons biomedical campus and a significant portion of the commutes will be by bicycle.
Issues including bicycle parking, theft prevention, intersections and shower facilities were brought up. Aurora Council Member
Brad Pierce discussed future construction plans while Aurora Planner
Jay Pierce discussed the recently approved Northwest Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan. To help identify the most pressing complaints on the campus, cyclists filled out surveys with problem details. This information will be presented to campus and city leaders for consideration and action.
"This is the start of a long-term relationship between the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority, University of Colorado Health Sciences planners and campus cyclists that want to ride their bikes to school or work." said
Tom Tobiassen, president of Bicycle Aurora.
Regularly scheduled meetings will start this winter. Bicycle Aurora has been working to improve bicycle safety and routes in Aurora for eight years. For more information, visit
