Guy Meyer (Santa Fe, N.M.) made two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation to give the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team a 61-58 lead Saturday night at the Lions Den.
P.J. Forrest hit a desperation three-pointer for CU-Colorado Springs with two seconds remaining to knot the game at 61-61 and sending the contest into overtime. UCCS upset the Skyhawks in double overtime, 82-81 and handing Fort Lewis their first overtime loss of the season.
Fort Lewis, ranked seventh in this week's NCAA North Central regional poll, falls to 16-8 overall and 12-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks need to win at least one game to share the RMAC West Division title; they would clinch the West Division title with two wins.
Free throws hurt the Skyhawks as they made only 19 of 28 for 67.9 percent. Fort Lewis missed five free throws in overtime while the Mountain Lions (5-20, 4-13 RMAC) made all eight attempts.
Junior guard Ryan Johnson (Aurora) led the Skyhawks with 25 points on 9 of 17 shooting. Tim Bieri (Berthoud) followed with 23 points. Bieri, who made 10 of 12 from the charity stripe, is three points shy of hitting the 1,000 point mark. Sophomore Devon Manning (Kirtland, N.M.) added 14 points to round out the Skyhawks scoring in double digits.
Patrick Hannaway led both teams offensively with 27 points.
Fort Lewis will host their final regular season game on Tuesday night. The Skyhawks will play Adams State at 8 p.m. and wrap up the regular season at CSU-Pueblo on Friday. Both games can be heard with Dave Bray on KIUP 930 AM and www.radiodurango.com.
