Local club receives silver medal from USA Swimming

Mission Aurora Colorado Swimming-MACS has been designated as a Silver Medal Club by USA Swimming for attaining a high level of athlete performance and organizational success. MACS is one of only four swim teams in Colorado to receive this distinguished award, which recognizes USA swim clubs for their commitment to performance excellence, successful club administration, and for their support of USA swimming. Founded in 1977, the team has a long history of providing swimmers in Aurora, Centennial, Parker, Greenwood Village, and Denver with access to a premier swim program.

Headquartered in Aurora, MACS has had a strong start to the 2009 season. At the recent 2009 Colorado State Short Course Championship in Fort Collins, six MACS swimmers from Aurora racked up top 10 finishes. Kristyn Bobka, 10, finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, and third in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle, along with two other top 10 finishes. Timmy Martin dominated many of the 11-12-year-old boys events, finishing first in four events-50-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events, as well as three other top 10 finishes. Jane Rowland did well in the girls 11-12-year-old events, finishing fifth in the 200-yard butterfly, and placing sixth in the 500-yard freestyle and 400 individual medley events.

Brandon Barocio and John Martens had a number of top 10 finishes at the state championship among the 13-14-year-old boys. Barocio placed third in the 500-yard freestyle event, and had fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and 1650-freestyle events, as well as three other top 10 finishes. Martens finished fifth in three events-the 400 individual medley, 200 breaststroke, and 1650 freestyle-along with four other top 10 finishes. Ju Han Hong, of Aurora, garnered high point score at every short course swim meet during the 2008/2009 season as an 11-12-year-old and at the 2009 All-Star Meet in Lawrence, Kansas.

At the 2009 Western Regional Short Course Sectional Championship in Seattle, Lauren Stoeckle, Loren Brandon, and Bonnie Brandon led the MACS elite team of female swimmers to a third-place overall finish. Stoeckle finished in sixth-place in the 200 breaststroke event. Loren Brandon placed third in both the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle events, breaking a state record with her 1,000-yard freestyle time of 9:52.35. Bonnie Brandon set five state records at the Sectional Championship and finished first in the 200-yard backstroke event for the third consecutive sectional competition.
