The inaugural HBID Open Golf Tournament at CommonGround Golf Course on Tuesday, July 21, was a benefit for the junior golf training program and caddy school at CommonGround. Local area business men and women on Havana Street, neighbors and friends came together for a fantastic round of golf at this beautiful new course. The tournament raised $2,600 which will go towards scholarships for local area youth to learn the game of golf and attend caddy school at the course. The youth attending the caddy school will be eligible for the Eisenhower-Evans Caddy Scholarship program, a full-tuition and fees scholarship for deserving caddies sponsored by the Colorado Golf Association and Western Golf Association.
CGA's executive director, Ed Mate, attended the University of Colorado on an Eisenhower-Evans Caddy Scholarship. Dave Troyer, Director of Golf at CommonGround, said there are many area youth on a waiting list for lessons and caddy school at the course, so the money will be well spent this summer.
The HBID Open was organized and run by the Havana Business Improvement District's golf committee, which included Havana BID board members Mark Vissering, Jack Tierney, Dumitri Palea, and Milena Caldwell, as well as Salvation Army Board Member, Pete Traynor, and Havana BID Executive Director, Gayle Jetchick.
