A pack of cards: Life and learning

Life is like a pack of cards; much of the time we have to play with the hand we are dealt and make do. Life is like the inheritance that my grandmother Fletcher left me, it could have been a million dollars or a few pennies but in fact it was about $200 and that was that. I'm not grumbling about it, I spent the money and got on with other things.

Sometimes we are in a position where our life is suddenly plunged into a dense grey mist, we become disorientated and confused. Where before we could be sure of our intentions and place in the world this fog comes and interferes; the plan is lost or forgotten and when the mist disappears in a strong gust of wind we discover our nakedness.

That is the scenario I found myself in when I left my job as Head-Chef at Prima Ristorante with Kevin Taylor; naked and more than slightly embarrased. As the saying goes, the best laid plans can go to waste! Here I was in a job that demanded too much of me, too old, too slow, forgetful; the ages had blunted me. Working 70 - 80+ hours a week is realistic for a young chef in an industry which demands 200% commitment and the honest truth is that at the end of the day I wasnt prepared to give it. It isnt the thing for a family man with lots of other responsibilities.

So there I was; naked and having to look at the direction of my life, what I have done in the past, my achievements and failures, blemishes and golden spots... and try to come up with a fresh perspective. I found that my passion was for writing, and through this I could experience a profound insight into all manner of things. Scribbling is more that putting ideas down on paper, it is translating all those wonderful visions and enabling others to experience the same.

Well, for now I am on the path as a 'freelance' writer. Not in a commercial kitchen sweating over the stove or worrying about whether the meals are prepared correctly. Between this and that I'm struggling but making my way forward, with a new life and an opening into a new world.
