Blog Entry 4 of 6 The Hometown Kid

Julius Vaughns This is a collection of what my life has been and currently is like living in Aurora. Having lived here all my life, I see a side of the city that many people don't. So bear with me as I take you through a journey through what I like to call Colorado's forgotten city.

Back in the day, going to the mall was fun
Contributed by: Julius Vaughns   on 4/4/2007

I'm not a huge mall shopper anymore. I think the older I get and the more bills I accrue, the less I go the mall. But I remember when I used to go to the Aurora Mall every week. Whether I was buying a new pair of shoes or if I had a taste for a Cinnabon, I was never reluctant about going.

That was about four to five years ago, though. Now, the Town Center at Aurora, formerly known as the Aurora Mall, isn't what it used to be, especially for youth and minorities. Ever since a shooting occurred there in the summer of 2005, a lot has changed.

For example, if you are younger than 16, you have to be accompanied by a parent or an adult after 5 p.m. on the weekends. Also, you can't wear any type of headgear that is "gang-related," such as do-rags and stocking caps.
I can relate to the people who are frustrated because I, too, have worn a do-rag to the mall and been asked to remove it, get ID'd anytime I walk into the mall at night and I've also noticed police keeping an eye on me.

Recently, more attention has been brought to this matter by other media outlets. We, too, want to know what you think of the situation.
Have you been harassed by security or police at the mall? Are you a business owner? How has your business been affected by these changes? Do you think the mall is safer and overall a better place now? Tell us about it.

In the coming weeks, community journalist Kevin Villegas and I will delve into this topic, giving you a better perspective on this situation, but we need your help. You can post your opinion to YourHub.com, e-mail us at news@YourHub.com or call us at 303-954-2967 or 303-954-2631 and we can help you share your story.
