As I recover from a broken hip, I continue to be amazed by the concern and compassion I am encountering by everyone I meet on my daily jaunts.
I live on the third floor, so that means negotiating two flights of stairs to get to ground level. There are no elevators here. A Mexican neighbor offers to carry my walker. One of my African-American neighbors, a big, strapping fellow wants to carry me down. I am always flattered, but decline as I realize I must do it on my own.
In the parking lot, my other neighbors rush over to my car wanting to help me get myself and my walker in. At the mall, cars stop as the driver motions for me to cross. Doors are opened for me as well. As I enter a nearby supermarket, a group of Aurora firemen are exiting. They see me hobbling in and cannot be more solicitous, asking if they cna get a shopping cart for me. I refuse, telling them I am having enough trouble keeping track of my legs, walker, shopping list and brain and can't possibly add anything else to the melange.
Laughter. I add, "You guys should be in Hollywood. You are all so gorgeous." More laughter. I swear I've never seen a better looking bunch. Other strike up a conversation inquiring how I am doing. The employees want to help with my shopping.Atthe checkout line, people insist I go ahead of them and that is where an Oriental lady hugs me and tells me she hopes I get better real soon.
I'm deeply touched by this melting pot of caring. Thank you one and all!
