After finishing the Girl Scouts 5K race in just over 23 minutes, Girl Scout Brynell Yount of Centennial knew she had done something special. "I feel really happy... and tired!" she said. The 5K race was part of the 10th anniversary Girl Scouts 5K & 1K Walk/Run that took place Oct. 28 in Washington Park in Denver.
At just ten years old, Brynell finished the race 47th out of nearly 2,000 5K participants. "My goal this year was to make it in 23 minutes, so I'm really proud that I got so close," she said. That's some goal, especially considering that last year Brynell finished with a time of 26:12. "I took off three minutes from my time, and that feels good."
For Brynell, time wasn't the only thing on her mind during the race, "I also really wanted to beat my twin brother," she said.
Brynell's twin, Blake, finished the race with a strong time of 25:32. Although she may have been running to beat him, Brynell cheered her brother to the finish.
The twins' mom, Gail, also ran the 5K and dad watched from the sidelines, making the event a real family affair for the Younts. "We like to get out and do things like this together," Brynell said.
This feeling of togetherness was echoed by the over 3,000 Girl Scouts, friends and family members who participated in either the 1K or the 5K. This number included girls from across the state who participated under the banner of Girl Scouts of Colorado. Troop leader Jennifer Heiny of Colorado Springs brought ten girls from her Brownie and Junior troops to participate in the race for the first time.
"We've been training twice a week and earning fitness badges to prepare for the event," Jennifer said. "I'm hoping that the 5K will instill a sense of sportsmanship and also show them how to work toward a goal while having fun."
In celebrating the 10th anniversary of this annual event, Girl Scouts' upholds its dedication to helping all girls start a lifetime of healthy habits at a young age and getting families and friends to move together.
