College Friday hits APS
Contributed by: Rich Blegen on 4/11/2008

College Friday, sponsored by College In Colorado, is the day designated to raise awareness about the importance of higher education for Colorado's youth. This year, College Day takes place Friday, April 11, and coincides with the statewide ACT exam.

The APS Nutrition Services Department encourages all students and staff membersto wear their favorite college apparel on Friday, April 11, to support College Friday.

Currently, Colorado ranks second in the nation for the greatest number of degree holders per capita, yet only one in five Colorado ninth-grade students will earn a college degree.

In support of the APS Vision to graduate every child with the choice to attend college without remediation, students, staff, parents and community members will participate in many "college and career" school themes this month.

Here are some examples from across the district.

  • Kenton Elementary School
    • April 21 - College and Career Day 9:30 a.m. -11a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
  • North Middle School
    • April 10 - Career Day
    • April 29 - 7th grade AVID students are visiting UNC
    • May 2 - 8th grade AVID students are visiting CSU
  • Mracheck
    • April - School counselors will speak with individual students regarding career opportunities, what to do to be successful in school to build a future, the importance of extracurricular and service activities on a college resume and the importance of developing good study habits and skills.
  • Murphy Creek K-8
    • April 11 - College and Career Night (Family and Community Event) This event is a culmination of a week-long focus where students learned about various colleges and career opportunities. On Friday, each class will showcase their hard work for the "assigned" college or career. Families and students will visit the classrooms. In the gym, there will be an informational set-up with college and career-related booths. Students will dress up in a career uniform of their choice at the photo booths.
  • Rangeview
    • April 9 - College Spirit Day (students who wear college apparel are eligible to win a college application fee or jump drive)
    • April 9 - 16 College Representative Visit
    • April 15 - Career Fair
    • April 26 - La Raza Visit

The State of Colorado initiated College In Colorado as a statewide effort to improve college access and change expectations about college for all Colorado students. A cornerstone of the campaign, www.CollegeInColorado.org, offers a one stop resource to help students, parents and counselors plan, apply and pay for college.
