Candidate profile: James Hibbard
Contributed by: James Hibbard on 9/26/2006

James Hibbard is the incumbent for Adams County Coroner.

My name: James Hibbard, honorably discharged veteran.

Age: 53

My family: My loving wife Chalonda and I have been married for 24 years. We have three adult children, Jamie and granddaughter Makinna, Amber and Victoria. Victoria just recently married and we welcomed Josh to our family. Chalonda and I are blessed with our 2-year-old granddaughter, Angela, who we are adopting. I am the third child of seven children of my parents Joe and Lorraine Hibbard. Daily I am rewarded with the strong support and backing of my family. Chalonda and I attend Summit of Peace Lutheran Church in Thornton.

What I do: I am the current Adams County Coroner. This is my first term after having a wonderful career with the Adams County Sheriff's Department. During my 23-year career with the Sheriff's Department I worked in all areas to include, patrol, investigations, civil, detective division, detention center and swat. I promoted through the department as a sergeant and retired as a lieutenant. I have numerous years of experience and training in planning, budgeting, personnel leadership development, disaster planning and response. I have experience in all types of death investigation. I have an extensive background in policy making and implementation. I have attended several management development classes and attended Arapahoe Community College, majoring in Public Administration and criminal justice. Upon retiring I worked for a local mortuary where I gained understanding and knowledge of grief support to families in their time of loss. All total I have over 26 years and countless hours of training to meet the requirements for the Coroner's Office.

My favorite place in town to hang out: Chalonda and I love to try new restaurants, but my most favorite is at home with my 2 year old granddaughter, Angela, where we swing, play with sidewalk chalk, and do other fun things she likes to do.

What I like most about living here: The many different tempos of communities. I love the mountains, however, I am drawn to the eastern plains, farm communities, with their sense of community and support.

My interests and hobbies: I like to play golf with my friends and Chalonda. I like to spend time at the lake boating. I like to cook for large groups and I do wood working. I enjoy making furniture for family and friends.

What is my favorite thing to cook: I love cooking for large groups and my favorite is having a pig roast. There is nothing better than a whole pig cooked in the pit and shared with the entire family and close friends. We usually do this at least once a year.

People who inspired me (and how): My inspiration comes from my parents who taught me to always to the right thing. As a young person, John F. Kennedy inspired me to be involved and help others. Most recently my granddaughter who reminds me there is something new to learn daily.

How I have contributed to the community: On a regular basis Chalonda and I provide support to the Denver Rescue Mission by supplying funds and goods. We are active supporters for the local Down Syndrome Organization. We provide support to our local schools through fundraisers, and by providing supplies for our kids in the community in need. We participate in the annual holiday gifting for the families less fortunate than ourselves. We support our local veterans program and cancer organizations. On a regular basis I give blood to the Bonfils Blood Center (I am almost a 3 gallon donor), this is something everyone can do. I am a member of the Brighton Elks, and the Brighton Early Rotary where I also participate in many local projects.

What are the biggest issues facing community now: From my own prospective and in speaking with other leaders and community members, education centers as a primary concern for many Adams County communities. The need for expanded facilities and more teachers is presented by our enjoyed growth. We must ensure that we provide a proper education to our children who are our future. Closer to the office, I am committed that the Coroner's Office maintain a reasonable emergency response, and that we are prepared. I am also committed to reducing the number of suicides in Adams County with educational and support programs.
