Candidate profile: Nikki Bigham-Gullette
Contributed by: Nikki Bigham-Gullette on 9/19/2006

Nikki Bigham-Gullette is running for clerk and recorder of Adams County.

My name: Nikki Bigham-Gullette

Age: 46

My family: My husband Wesley and I have four children and four grandchildren with a fifth grandchild expected in the spring of 2007.

What I do: I am an IT Project Manager I work mostly on a contractual basis doing computer implementations for Fortune 500 companies.

My favorite place in town to hang out: Watching my grandchildren. That could be watching them play sports or just playing in the yard or park. I like to join in when possible because they can be quite creative.

What I like most about living here: The people are some of the friendliest in the world, but I have to say the majesty of the mountains are definitely a highlight.

My interests and hobbies: My interest is mostly in making my community better. I do a lot of volunteering, most of which teaches me more than I ever thought possible.

What is my favorite thing to cook: I like to bake when it's cold outside. On warm days I like to barbecue.

People who inspired me (and how): My grandmother was a huge influence because she had such a challenging life. She raised nine kids and four grandchildren and still had plenty of time to help a friend, volunteer or take all of her grandchildren out for fun.

Abraham Lincoln is also greatly admired because he never gave up and perservered through a lot of uphill battles. He didn't give up his principles even when he knew it would cause even greater challenges for him.

How I have contributed to the community: I was a founding member of a group that lobbied for charter schools in Colorado a number of years ago. From that effort I assisted in getting charter schools open or started in three school districts.

I was also a presenter for a year around school conference for District 12. And was an adult sponsor for a pilot program called STEP that worked with gangs and gang violence in order to stop young people from becoming involved with gangs. I worked with adjudicated youth in a charter school as well.

What are the biggest issues facing community now: Growth would be the biggest issue, the changes continuously in the infrastructure stretch available resources. By continually assessing processes we can minimize costs in the county, while still providing necessary services. In addressing growth you also need to ensure the community is not impacted in a negative way through good communication with community members and businesses in the areas as they change.
