Many people, especially Democrats, question the premise about the war in Iraq as combating terrorism. They maintain there was no proof that Saddam Hussein had anything to do with the terrorists. Entering "Saddam Hussein and bin laden" into the search engine brings up plenty of hits to pursue.
One is a PDF report that John F. Kerry (who served in Viet Nam, by the way) acknowledged a connection.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/alqaida/story/0,12469,798270,00.html "This was not the first time that President Saddam had offered Mr Bin Laden a partnership. At least one approach is believed to have been made during the Saudi dissident's sojourn in Sudan from 1990 to 1996. On that occasion, the guerrilla leader turned the emissaries away, out of a pious man's contempt for President Saddam's secular Ba'athist regime."
Saturday February 6, 1999 The Guardian
Saddam Hussein's regime has opened talks with Osama bin Laden, bringing closer the threat of a terrorist attack using chemical, biological or nuclear weapons, according to US intelligence sources and Iraqi opposition officials.
The key meeting took place in the Afghan mountains near Kandahar in late December. The Iraqi delegation was led by Farouk Hijazi, Baghdad's ambassador in Turkey and one of Saddam's most powerful secret policemen, who is thought to have offered Bin Laden asylum in Iraq.
Above are but a few of the past stories that can be easily found by anyone objective enough to look..
