Why Boulder is so darn awesome
Contributed by: James Fiebiger   on 8/5/2007

A typical Saturday in Boulder is just so darn fun. I love everything about the place. Just going on a walk from my apartment, down the creek path to the Farmers' Market, you see some of the neatest people. You see people with flowers for sale, you see people doing thai chi, you see little kids swimming in the creek, and tons and tons of tubers cooling off by riding the lazy river known as Boulder Creek. It's a glorious place to be in the summertime.

Boulder is in my blood. I love the culture here. The vibe. So many good vibrations, I'd swear we are all Beach Boys and California Girls. I feel like there is always a song floating through the air here too. Either amplified from the St. Julien mega-sound system, or just a humble tune by a guitarist or saxophone player on the Pearl Street mall ordown with his toes in the creek.

It smells so good here this time of year. There are a hundred different kinds flowers blooming throughout the season here. I miss tulip season already. I wishI took more pictures of all the red and yellow and purple giant tulips that blossommed everywhere about 2 months ago. Still we have many Morning Glories, and tons of flowers whose names I don't even know. Nowadays, the smell is less of flowers and more of freshly cut grass ... not that I'm complaining.

The Farmers' Market is like no other farmers' market I have ever been to. It has everything you could want. Every kind of fresh fruit and veggie. But the real good part is the food court. I love looking around and having to choose between tamales or thai noodles or smoothies. Everything looked and smelled amazing. Plus the people around you in the Farmers' Market are about the friendliest people in the world. Everybody is smiling. Not a frown in the bunch. No child throwing a temper tantrum. Only the sound of giggling andscreams of joy are heard over the sound of percussionist street performers.

I even saw a dog wearing booties! I didn't even know that existed.

For a person who is fairly involved in the sport of people-watching, Boulder Saturdays are an Olympic event. It's people watching on the grandest scale. You can look in any direction and see some other interesting person doing something interesting. It's a joy just to sit and watch from a nice quiet grassy patch.

You stay classy, Boulder.
