Blog Entry 3 of 60 Carless in Boulder
What it's like to voluntarily go carless as a way of life in Boulder, Colorado.

South Boulder Needs Another Pub
Contributed by: Amy Gahran   on 2/9/2007

I live in the southeast corner of town, so the Table Mesa Shopping Center is convenient to me by bus (the Dash) or bike, or even on foot if the weather is good. Consequently, I often meet my friend Cathy (who also lives in South Boulder) at the Southern Sun brewpub.

But there's a drawback: Southern Sun is almost always hideously overcrowded in the evening. I mean, packed to the point you can barely move, with a wait for tables of an hour or more. Plus, the acoustics in that restaurant are awful. It's one of the noisiest places in town.

South Boulder could really use another good-sized pub. I'm surprised no one's jumped on this business opportunity yet. We don't need another sit-down or family-style restaurant -- in that same shopping center, Tandoori Grill and Ajuua are rarely full. People in South Boulder need another nearby bar to hang out, get a drink, and some inexpensive food.

Maybe Conor's or the Walnut Brewery could open a South Boulder branch? What do you think? Seems like someone's missing a business opportunity here.

I'm guessing the rent scares most of the would be tavern owners off.

I'm sorry I found out about The Hornet, Brendan. But they have really good food and cheap drinks.

I hear Mountain Sun is better, both food- and drink-wise than Southern Sun. But, that might just be my crazy friends and their drunken rants.

Just the latest in a long line of places that were cool until everyone else found out about it? I hate that. I'm starting to feel that way about The Hornet on Broadway here in Denver.

Well, when I was a lad growing up in South Boulder decades ago, we had to walk or bike to the nearest pub in downtown Boulder and try to sneak in. ;) But I do agree, as I do with the addition of almost any pub that sell beer in draft, by the pint. Your friendly neighborhood web host, jeff-
