Thanks to my roommate/current beer cart driver at Willis Case Golf Course,I was recently informed of the newest addition to
www.williscasemensclub.com:The Cart Girl of The Month. Interesting approach, gentlemen. I have mixed feelings about this whole thing.
While I think it's great that you're giving these gals some attention for their time and efforts at your course, something tells me that there's an ulterior motive.
Why not ask her some more interesting questions besides the best and worst part of being a cart girl AND who her favorite Men's Club member is? (You're lucky she chose her dad.)
I was a cart girl at FlatIrons Golf Course in Boulder last summer. It was pretty awful. Men are the only ones that tip well, and it's just weird. The only day I wore a halter top was the day I made the most tips. All the rest of the days, I wore polo shirts because that's what I felt most comfortable in.
That brings up working at the Fox Theatre. When I used to work coatcheck and be a cocktail waitress, some of the security guards would make comments to me like, "You're not gonna make any tips in a turtleneck" or "Why don't you unbutton your shirt a little more? You'll make more money that way" or "Make him write his number down on the receipt. Play games with him. You'll get tipped more."
First of all, I'm not going to sport a strapless, boob-revealing shirt in a venue that doesn't heat up until it's completely full with people. And while I'd still walk away with tips in the triple digits on the nights that I'd wear turtlenecks, don't get me wrong. Sometimes I enjoy showing a little skin, and when I do ... it's because I WANT TO. Not because someone else suggested it.
It's interesting how women are tossed into the jobs that they are. Given that women apply for these jobs, I'd love to see a guy driving a beer cart. I've actually heard of one guy that used to drive the cart at FlatIrons. I've only seen one male being a cocktail waitor, if you will, and it was refreshing. Why is it that during all the years I worked at the Fox, there were only women working the box office window and only men working in the dungeon basement box office of Albums on the Hill? The time that I did in fact ask, I received, "People aren't going to get as mad at a pretty girl when they tell them they're not on the guest list or the show is sold out." Hmm... that angers me.
Don't get me wrong. My girl Jessica is making good money at Willis Case and she personally is loving it. It seems like she has that place wrapped around her finger. She's not only the cart girl -- she's a bartender and some days she's even the chef because "someone" overslept. If I were on the Men's Club committee, I'd be talking about that. She's smart, gorgeous, confident, positive,a team player and fun to be around. She's also going to school to be a teacher. She is not, however, looking for a date with a man that's old enough to be her father.
It's good to know that there's a Willis Case Women's Club. You're lucky I called and made sure before I started going off on that. But where's the Web site? Ladies! Get on that!
What are your thoughts/personal experiences with tipping jobs? I want to know.
Have any of you ladies ever worked a "man's" job? And vice versa??
