Girls Rock! yet?

Tearjerker and rockumentary are two genres that don't generally go hand in hand. But you'll need a hanky and your
Joan Jett lighter when watching
Girls Rock!, a documentary chronicling one session of the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, OR.... The filmmakers didn't shy away from turning their lens on the campers' lonely moments of girlhood: lingering on how they long to fit in and be accepted, and how self-doubt and cliquishness threaten to stifle both their social and musical progress. But inspired by their counselors, the girls eventually shed their inhibitions, dive into their instruments, and find their voices.

Portland's Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls isn't just a week-long retreat where preteens learn how to become the next Joan Jett. It's an incredible feminist project that reclaims the Spice-Girls-tainted concept of girl power by helping young women love girlhood in all its awkwardness - while they play power chords with their amps set at 11... The film uses an aesthetic borrowed from zines, music videos and campy mental hygiene films, a
Kathleen Hanna-heavy soundtrack and tons of sociological data. Most impressive, however, is the fact that they refuse to portray Rock 'n' Roll Camp as idyllic, exposing the flaws - catfights, pariahs - that exist even in a girl-positive space.

The film follows several campers:
Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal;
Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth addiction, homelessness and gang activity; and
Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog
Pipi. What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.
