Zach Galifianakis' out-of-the-box style of humor was in full force on Saturday night at the Boulder Theater. The comic is mostly known for his role in the snowboarding comedy
Out Cold as Luke, the bushy-bearded comedic sidekick that gets his man-dangle stuck in the hot tub's jets. He has also been featured in several other movies, makes guest appearances on
The Sarah Silverman Show,
Jimmy Kimmel Live, David Letterman, and
Jay Leno.
Zach told me earlier this week in an interview that the show would be, "Mostly all new material," which is great news when you go and see a stand up that you are a fan of. Nothing is worse than hearing the same jokes that were on the CD or television special. On Saturday he stuck to his word and delivered a plethora of new jokes.
So, much of Galifianakis' comedy, like all great comedians is based on his delivery. Sometimes he looks lost whether it be wandering around on stage or playing the piano for an extended amount of time. These lulls leave you soothed by his pacing and piano playing but at the same time you are on the edge of your seat waiting for the next joke. Then when the jokes come they are that much better. It's like how food tastes better when you are hungriest. He lets you starve for humor and thenjust at the right moment he feeds you with hilarity.
The only bad part of his jokes are that you really cannot repeat them to people that were not at the show without making yourself look like an idiot. I tried and let's just say I don't have the delivery. I attempted to repeat one to my boss. I told him, "I sometimes sit Indian style on the hardwood in my apartment and yell, 'YOU AIN'T GOT NO PANCAKE MIX.'" Needless to say he did not laugh, looked at me weird, and I think I am going to have to take a drug test at the end of the day.
One of the highlights of the show included Galifianakis going out into the crowd and talking with the audience. In an attempt to make light of someone's job he asked a lady what her occupation was and she stated that she brought up less privileged children from South America to go to the ski resorts. Zach, knowing he couldn't' make fun of a charitable person just screamed, "F*ck." While this was going on a young lady got up to refresh her drink, Zach quickly snapped, "And where do you think you're going? Getting a drink? Get me one!" The girl wittily replied, "I am going to need your I.D.?"
Galifianakis ended the show with a signature lip-synching routine. He has ended shows like this before, most notably on Comedy Central where he stripped of down to tights and had a choir behind him sing "Eternal Flame." This time he stripped down to reveal a red dress with white ribbon around the waist. It was the dress from
Annie and the song was
The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow. As he pranced on stage and frequently adjusted his man region so the audience could see just enough, he would tear off one sheet after another on a white board. The board had such quotes written on it as, "Stop Dane Cook."
I highly enjoyed the show and had many laughs that came all the way from my gut. It was to the point where I had to wonder if my laugh was annoying anyone, but everyone seemed to be laughing as much as I. I was hearing laughs from my friends that I had never heard before.
I give the show 4.5 Brad A$$E$ out of a possible 5 Brad A$$E$
