I know I mentioned I would be once a week, but there are so many cool audience development ideas and articles that I couldn't resist.
Today I found an article about the Arvada Center's production of Frog and Toad. Here is the link:
"
;Frog & Toad" make splash at Arvada Center
Denver Post -
Denver,CO,USA
"'Frog & Toad' is the rare children's phenomenon to break though to wider audiences, even enjoying a run on Broadway. This, for all the world, feels compulsory. But as the lights go down, these 500 whippersnappers shriek like they're at a rock concert. Throughout the Arvada Center's wonderful presentation of "A Year With Frog & Toad," they lean forward in rapt attention, unabashed in their laughter and generous with their applause. Most seem not only open but even eager to return.
Talk about audience development.
If only we could force reluctant adults to withstand culture in this manner - we might have a more thriving audience base."
After viewing this article, I find it exciting that the Arvada Center has touched on an idea that could vastly help audience development - produce performances that appeal to the kid in all of us! Think about it. I am willing to bet that the performances where the adults were clapping and having a great time brought your organization the best feedback to date.
So putting this all in perspective, maybe the cultural arts could have more audience participation. Encourage the audience to clap along when appropriate. Place sections in your regular concerts where the audience can participate. The more you can reach the audience with their hearts and have them participate in the process of your art form, the more your audiences will aspire to keep coming back!
Until next time, may your audiences be happy and loyal ones, and if not, feel free to contact me!
