Audience Development - Press Releases!
Contributed by: Shoshana Fanizza   on 7/18/2008

This is going to be a quick one since the weekend is upon us, and there are a lot of great things to do this weekend!

I wanted to give you one reminder for press releases - tailor the release to your audience! For example, you may have an educational workshop for kids in relation to your performance. If you are sending to a kid friendly publication, you may want to change the order of your release to highlight the workshop and then mention the performance. For the performance, all ages release, you may want to simply mention the workshop in after thought to focusing on the performance details.

I know it will take a little more time in writing more focused releases instead of a one size fits all release, but I think you will notice the benefits after doing it this way. For one, the publications will appreciate you taking the time to relate to them specifically, and you will have a better chance of getting the right information in front of the right audience. In order to make it a little less time consuming, try to write paragraphs with the different bits of information that you will be able to move around and then at the end you can list the what, where, when information for each event. This way it will be a simple cut and paste with a little adjustment to the opening of the release.

Lastly, if time allows, try to send out releases individually with a different message to each editor. This is an easy way to start building relationships with the press, which translates into great audience development!

Until next time, may your audiences be happy and loyal ones, and if they are not, feel free to contact me!
