Audience Development - Arts Olympics?
Contributed by: Shoshana Fanizza   on 8/17/2008

We are in the midst of another Summer Olympics, and I am sure that the coverage for this event is incredible! With newspapers, radio, websites, photo opportunities, blogs, etc., the promotion of sports and the benefits of sports will be covered. The dedication with focused concentration and hours of practice, team building, drive and purpose, physical fitness, pride in accomplishment for yourself and your country, all of these benefits become obvious while watching the Olympics.

So, I ask my fellow cultural arts advocates, isn't it time for a worldwide spectacle for the arts? We already have interest that has been shown throughout the decades for talent competitions, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance being examples of the ability to capture a huge, appreciative audience. We already have competitions on a worldly scale for our individual art forms. As of late, we are racking our brains to come up with a way for educating humanity to acknowledge and embrace the impact that the arts supplies, but are we missing the obvious way to do this? Do you think the answer may be right under our nose and very visible these past few weeks?

Imagine the audience development possibilities and the audience participation potential of having an Arts Olympics. Reality shows, with the Olympics being one of the longest running of this kind, can bring reality to the arts. An Arts Olympics or some other named world wide arts competition, with all its various art forms represented, would be a way to share with the world the joy of the arts and what the arts gives to humanity. Seeing is believing and obtaining the perspective of the realities of how to become a great artist first hand, witnessing the history of how arts is a big part of our collective cultures, could inspire our world to view the arts as a necessary component for humanity (and not just an entertainment luxury). Media coverage and financial support on a local to worldwide level is sure to follow.

The Olympics have always affected me to begin an exercise program and to become as healthy as I can be. With the addition of new sports, such as the trampoline competition, my appreciation and amazement of sports in general grows. I have a feeling that an Arts Olympics would inspire people of all demographics to learn an art form and to appreciate the arts. The thrill of the various art forms represented would bring an opportunity for individuals to discover which art form touches them. An Arts Olympics, as a whole, would give us a solid opportunity for showing the impact of the arts for humanity. So what are we waiting for?

Until next time, may your audiences be happy and loyal ones, and if they are not, feel free to contact me!
