The graduations that weren't
Contributed by: Kevin Villegas/YourHub.com   on 12/27/2006

By now, I bet you're pretty sick of hearing about the Blizzard of 2006, the subsequent dig-out and how we are supposed to get another gigantic snowstorm Thursday and Friday.

But lost amid all the chaos of plows and magnesium chloride was the fact that many CU students didn't get to have a graduation.

Oh, they had a commencement. It was delayed by four hours and didn't recognize the students receiving a bachelor's degree individually, but it did happen. And it was wonderful.

But the snow kept a lot ofdegree-receiving students from participating in their departmental graduation ceremonies. And no, as an e-mail sent to the journalism candidates said, there wouldn't be a make-up date.

Ever read a 1,000-page book? Imagine that, but when you get to page 990, a bunch of snow falls on it, rendering it unreadable. You can't go buy another one. This book costs more than $20,000. Oh sure, you still have a $20,000 book. But you never got that sense of completion by finishing the story.

So how bad was the snow? Well, it was so bad that Hank Brown, the president of the University of Colorado, couldn't make it. A different member of the platform party had to read Norlin's Charge to the Graduates.

My brother Andrew and his friends never got to celebrate their graduation as a group. They never got to shake the dean's hand, receive their diploma holders or have their name called as being attached to a degree.

The snow couldn't be helped. The sheer amount of snow was staggering and it was obviously close to impossible to have the departmental ceremonies as usual.

But why not reschedule them for after the commencement? The business school had their departmental graduation right after the commencement in the Coors Events Center.

The university does the best they can in the best of circumstances.

But this was the worst of circumstances. Did they do the worst they could?

Events

For all of you brave folks out there who are in Boulder over the Winter Break, here are a few things you can do around campus and in Boulder.

-On Dec. 30 at 1 p.m., the men's basketball team takes on TCU at the Coors Events Center. Tickets are $10-34 and are available at www.cubuffs.com. The Buffs haven't played a game since Dec. 9. The Dec. 23 game against UC-Davis was, big shocker, postponed due to the weather. A make-up date hasn't been announced.

-Later that night at 7p.m., the women's basketball team will take on Houston. Tickets are free for students (with student ID) and are $8-15, available at www.cubuffs.com.

-And on New Year's Eve, there are a couple of events you could go to. Lisa Bell, a vocalist, will be throwing a New Year's shindig at Rhapsody's at Clear Creek, 1027 Washington St., Golden. Tickets are $89 and feature a six-course meal as well as the live entertainment. And if you would rather listen to a little classic rock, the Lost Canyon Band will be performing a New Year's Eve show at Nissi's, 2675 N. Park Drive, Lafayette. They cover songs from Zeppelin, The Who, Hendrix and The Doors, to name a few. Tickets for their show are $25 and are available at www.nissis.com.

News

-The Colorado Daily has more in their series of stories of the year. This time around, it's the opening of the 29 th Street Mall.

-The Campus Press is on hiatus during the winter break. Will it come back with a name change? What exactly happened during the semester between the editorial staff and the faculty of the journalism school? You can read Michael Roberts' column all about it by clicking here.

-Finally, The Denver Post has the results of a survey done by the Leeds School of Business about the economic outlook for 2007.

Have a great week! Don't do anything Hank Brown wouldn't do.

My personal BA from CU was not individually recognized, either. This is a long-standing tradition at CU, I believe. We stood as a group in that beloved Coors event center and turned our tassles en masse. I think it went something like this: "The College of Arts and Sciences . . . congratulations!" But you know what? It rocked! I was done and I had the sheepskin (cover) in my hand! Do I remember who spoke? No. Did the commencement ceremony make an impact on my future? No. Am I thankful I walked? Yes. It was a celebration, and I know the level of effort I put into it. Darn right I walked. And yes, I still bleed black and gold. Don't feel too cheated. I'd lay $$ on it that your brother is very proud of his accomplishment.
