We did the unthinkable Friday, July 27, and forced a whole bunch of students and teachers to interact during summer vacation.

It turned out great.

Friday was the Denver Newspaper Agency's annual summer teacher conference at Arapahoe Community College. This year YourHub.com helped add an extra element by participating in a concurrent "conference" on campus called Youth Journalism Day.

A brainchild of DNA Post-News educational services guru Jill Armstrong, the journalism day was used to introduce journalism and YourHub.com/nextgen to 50 Colorado students in fourth to eighth grade.

In the early morning, the students heard from Rocky Mountain News reporter Kevin Vaughan and publisher and editor John Temple.

I brought along five YourHub.com staffers with me and we spent the rest of the morning talking about traditional journalism and new media. In the afternoon, we hit the campus with the students.

The younger students did man-on-the-street interviews, while the older students covered seminars and the teacher conference's keynote speaker Stevan Kalmon, who spoke on learning in the 21st century.

The students then uploaded the stories on to yourhub.com/nextgen and presented their work to the teachers at the conclusion of the conference.

According to student writer Will O'Bryan:

The world is changing very fast, and teachers should not try to stop it or get in the way, but instead adapt to it, according to Stevan Kalmon, head of the organization "Learning for the 21st Century."

Good advice.

YourHub.com/nextgen is a great, safe place for young people to try their hand at new media.

During the conference, I also spoke to a group of teachers and demonstrated how they can use the "grown-up" YourHub.com. I can safely say that the younger generation has the edge when it comes to understanding and embracing new media technology.

Below is a small sampling of what the students produced. Bear in mind these young students were working on deadline and most wrote and posted these stories in less than an hour.

Digital Connection of Today
Learning in the 21st Century with Stevan Kalmon
Stephen Kalmon's lecture
Learning for the 21st Century
A Day in the Life of a Journalist
"The Lessons of Chaos"

My son wants to write blogs now. I think this is partially due to the very friendly and supportive community here at yourhub.

Ah, new media. I'm excited to see where journalism is going to be in 30 years.
