High School Students Take On Water Pollution
Contributed by: Ford Church   on 7/12/2006

Boulder, CO, May 3, 2006 - Whether you're an angler, tuber, kayaker, swimmer, picnicker, runner, or biker, Boulder loves Boulder Creek. Our creek is not only aesthetically pleasing, it is an important part of Boulder's ecosystem and watershed. However, the health of Boulder Creek is at stake because of storm drain pollution. Through the overuse of fertilizers on lawns and gardens, not cleaning up our pet waste, washing cars in our front yards, and general dumping of waste into storm drains, Boulder Creek's water quality has become a substantial issue that must be dealt with immediately.

The Community Adventure Program (CAP) is a student-directed class at New Vista High School that takes on issues affecting the environment and works to solve them. This quarter, CAP students have decided to take on storm drain pollution and how it affects Boulder Creek. In collaboration with the Watershed Approach to Stream Health (WASH) Project, the CAP class will be out in the community from May 8 - 11, 2006 working to clean up Boulder Creek and to educate people about storm drain runoff and water pollution problems in Boulder. This project is part of our class Action Project and our school's "4-Days in May" community service week.

An article or announcement in your media outlet will help raise an awareness and interest about the water pollution issues in Boulder and will encourage people to take action. Below is a brief schedule of our activities:

Monday, May 8, 2006, 8:45am - 3:00pm: WASH Project training and storm drain marking/stencil project.

Tuesday May 9, 2006, 8:45am - 3:00pm: Boulder Creek water quality testing, Boulder Creek clean-up project, and trash inventory.

Wednesday May 10, 2006, 4:00pm - 8:00pm: Table at the Boulder Farmer's Market to educate the community and quiz people about storm drain runoff pollution and prevention.

Thursday May 11, 2006, 8:45am - 3:00pm: Synthesize storm drain stencil data, water quality data, trash inventory along Boulder Creek, create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing our project.

To set up a time to meet the Community Adventure Program during their project next week, to schedule an interview, or to find out more about New Vista High School's 4-Days in May community service week, please contact Ford Church at 303.447.1076 or via email at ford@cottonwoodinstitute.org.
