Blog Entry 18 of 60 Carless in Boulder
What it's like to voluntarily go carless as a way of life in Boulder, Colorado.

Local color of spring: Peacock blue!
Contributed by: Amy Gahran   on 2/21/2007

OK, this has nothing to do with being carless, but...

The Greenbelt Meadows neighborhood in SE Boulder sits right next to a semi-rural property which for decades has hosted a lively, raucous community of peacocks. They roam free around our neighborhood -- big, gaudy chickens. I love 'em. Nothing says "What the..." like seeing a peacock on your deck.

Over the last couple of months, the peacocks haven't been roaming much. But today, with the temperature in the 50s and the sun nice and strong, one local blue-neck decided to hang out on my deck railing.

Right now, so much of what I see outside is grayish-brown, bleached of life and color from so much snow and ice. This made me smile.

Mating season starts in April. I'll post audio then. Stay tuned.

The crazier thing is when I take neighbor kids to the Denver zoo, where peacocks roam between outdoor exhibits, all the othe kids are Oooohing and Aaaaaahing over the peacocks -- but kids from my neighborhood don't even give them a glance! - Amy

That is truely beautiful! It would be crazy to see one right in your backyard.
