Blog Entry 30 of 60 Carless in Boulder
What it's like to voluntarily go carless as a way of life in Boulder, Colorado.

Make Me Commuter of the Year!
Contributed by: Amy Gahran   on 3/6/2007

(UPDATE MAR. 30: I WON!!!)

...Ideally, vote for me. Or yourself. Or somebody. Just do it before Friday, March 16.

I'm talking about GoBoulder's 2007 Commuter of the Year Contest, which honors someone in Boulder who " chooses biking, walking or riding the bus as a primary means of travel."

Well... That would be me!

Initially I wasn't going to nominate myself because I work at home, so I didn't think I had a commute. But according to this contest, I do -- it's just not job-related. So I did nominate myself. Here's what I said:

"A few months ago, my husband and I separated. He took our only car and moved up to Ft. Collins. Since I'm self-employed and work at home, I considered my options and realized I actually don't need a car.

"So I'm now voluntarily carless, and I'm blogging the experience on Carless in Boulder. Anywhere I need to go, I walk, bus, or bike it. I also joined Boulder CarShare, which is great, but rarely need to use their cars.

"Going carless is so much easier than I thought it would be! I'm enjoying it, and getting to know Boulder better than I have in the 12 years I've lived here. Even during this awful winter, it was a relief - I'd rather risk slipping and twisting an ankle than skidding into an intersection. This really works for me."

...Whadya think? If this sounds good, Go to GoBoulder's contest page and nominate me. Yeah, you don't get to "vote" as such, but I bet if they see a bunch of people nominating me it can't hurt my chances.

Or nominate whoever you like, if I'm not impressive enough. I don't mind. (sniff... sniff...)

When you fill in the form, just write "Greenbelt Meadows, SE Boulder" for my address, and "you already have it" for my phone. List my e-mail as amy@gahran.com

What does the winner get? "Winners will be featured in this year's Walk & Bike Week campaign." Hmph, I'd rather have a little cash for my new bike fund, but I'll take what I can get.

Thanks!

Boulder is an awesome place to do this, I went to school there and barely needed my car! I rode the bus to school and I walked to my part-time job, the grocery store and yoga classes -- and it was way less stressful than driving! I'm glad you are enjoying the carless world, I wish I had to rely less on my car than I do now ...

Oh, to be carless, carefree! I use my bicycle or the bus to get to and from the newsroom -- it's the only way to be! I'm glad you're blogging about your experience, so that others can see that it's not difficult to get around without a car.

This is an interesting thing you're doing...voluntarily at that! But at least it's allowing you to get to know your city a little better. Good for you!
