What it's like to voluntarily go carless as a way of life in Boulder, Colorado.

Human rights travesty on South Boulder Road
Contributed by: Amy Gahran   on 3/5/2007

When you explore your neighborhood on foot, you start seeing all sorts of things. This being Boulder, most of them are fun or offbeat. But recently I was shocked to find egregious human rights abuses within a mile of my home.

The scene of the crime: The NW corner of Manhattan and South Boulder Road, just in front of the Days Inn.
The victim: A hapless chef. His feet are amputated, and he's strapped to a fencepost. He bears the scars of other incidents of abuse. There he stands, at all hours and in all weather, forced to beckon passersby in to eat a the hotel's Eggcredible Cafe.
I tried to interview the chef, so I'd know what to tell Human Rights Watch -- but he's deep in shock and unable to speak. The bitter winter chill has frozen a psychotic grin on his face.

So my photos will have to be testament to this crime.

Who will save the chef?

Wow, Anna, that's really interesting. I'd never heard any of that. Got a link for that story of yours? Personally I think the chef is a riot.

The question should be who hasn't saved the chef. I have done a personal interview with "Chef Maciek" (who resembles the chef at Eggcredible Cafe) and have heard that he's been stolen at least five times by various Boulder kids. Each time he's come back. Either a neighbor, police officer, or a local high school administer called to pick him up back where he belongs. For some reason, he ended up at Fairview High School football stadium and then moved to the high school office. That's when he came back with missing legs, a hole in his stomach, and the most scratches. He's only been living on South Boulder Road at the Days Inn for less than two years. Even though he's banged up, the SOBO folks (South Boulder) love him & hopefully he stays for good this time.

I'll get right on it, but first I have to save the Whales, free Willy, and Free Tibet.
