The University of Colorado hockey team's undefeated season continues after a big weekend at the "Best of the West Showcase" in San Jose, California. The Buffs outscored their opponents 23 to 1 in three games against New Mexico, San Jose State, and California State University at Long Beach.
CU began play on Thursday night, with a 13-0 blowout win over New Mexico. Three Buff players had a five point night, while two had a four point night. The five-point nighters were Andy Neitenbach who had four goals and one assist, Jeff Neitenbach with two goals and three assists, and Scott Tittle finishing with one goal and four assists.
The four-point nighters were Sean Carpenter with a goal and three assists, and Conor Williams with two goals and two assists. Also, Freshman Goaltender Kevin Litinsky registered his fourth shutout of the season.
Friday night brought a similar result, as Litinsky added his fifth shutout of the season, and his second of the trip with another blowout against host, San Jose State. The 8-0 win proved that the Buffs weren't taking a mid-semester vacation as Jeff Neitenbach added another five point night with all coming as assists. Captain P.J. Bevan and Chad Wetzel both had a two-goal night, while Max Myers, Andy Neitenbach, Sean Carpenter, and Brad Edelberg also notching goals.
However, after two easy wins, the Buffs met their equal as they played Long Beach on Saturday. Long Beach came into the game with a 7-1-2-0 record and 16 points, only four behind division leader CU. The matchup lived up to its hype with both teams playing an aggressive hard-hitting game that saw five game misconducts, and two unsportsmanlike penalties.
Long Beach scored first with less than two-minutes remaining in the first period from a goal by Mike Weber and assists by Sean Hoang and Brian Horwitz. The Buffs peckerd LBSU Goalie Frankie Mitrano with shots in the second period, but couldn't get the puck in the back of the net.
With 4:50 remaining in regulation, Colorado finally scored thanks to Max Myers who received a beautiful pass from Chad Wetzel. Myers would add another one with 23 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Buffs to a 2-1 win, and extend the winning streak to 11 games.
The Buffs now have 22 points and lead the ACHA West Division, while Utah Valley State College is second with 20, and Long Beach is third with 17. The Buffaloes will play #2 Utah Valley State this Saturday at the CU Rec-Center at 7:30 P.M., which may turn out to be the best game of the year.
