Back when I went to journalism school, they made sure to teach us what we really needed to know to survive as journalists. Things like not letting sources flub us off with non-answers, corroborating key facts, meeting deadlines...
...And, of course, how to find the free food. No kidding, we were tested on it. If you've ever tried to survive on a starting reporter's salary and schedule, you'll know that often munchies at public functions are the most reliable source of nourishment you can hope for.
Since today isWalk & Bike to Work Day, this morning I'd planned to grab a free breakfast at the
breakfast station nearest my home -- at the Table Mesa Park n' Ride.I also had to stop by the post office, and the Park n' Ride is on the way.
The post office opens at 8am, so at 8am I headed out on my trusty cruiser. At 8:06 am I rolled up to the breakfast station to find... damned little left.
Yep -- the breakfast station opened at 7am. by the time I arrived, only a few dry bagels were left. Not even any cream cheese or juice. I kid you not -- look at the photo above.
I should have known to leave earlier. I could have gotten to the breakfast station by 7:30 or 7:45, had a decent breakfast, and then hit the post office just as it opened. As it was, I ended up chewing on a dry whole wheat bagel, nursing my wounded pride. I should have known...
On the bright side, the volunteers (who were just about to pack up the breakfast station) told me they served 112 riders that morning. Well, that's cool -- not bad for my little corner of town.
Congrats to all who biked in this morning -- and who were smart enough to get there in time to get fed!
