Blog Entry 39 of 60 Carless in Boulder
What it's like to voluntarily go carless as a way of life in Boulder, Colorado.

Guilt-tripping with my new pedometer
Contributed by: Amy Gahran   on 4/4/2007

Last Saturday, my new pedometer arrived. It's pretty neat: an Accusplit Eagle 120XL. So I started using it Sunday and logged a little over 12,000 steps. I felt pretty proud of myself.

Also on Sunday, I brought over the car of a friend who wanted to leave it at my place while she's out of town for a week. Of course, having her car here makes it tempting to use it for errands I could -- and should -- be doing on foot, bike, or bus.

So, being a flawed human being, I took the car to the bank and grocery store, and even one morning to the gym (just a quarter mile away) since I felt rushed.

Monday and Tuesday's count showed the effect -- down to about 8,000 steps each day. Ouch.

Today I walked to the gym, haven't driven so far, and I'm already at 8,000 steps. I'll go for a walk this afternoon to preemptively assuage my guilt, because I'm using my friend's car to have dinner with friends in Westminster tonight.

To be honest, it'll be a relief when she takes her car back. I do feel guilty.

Actually, after hitting a major traffic jam on Broadway yesterday while driving downtown to get a haircut, driving doesn't seem all that convenient to me!
