Wannabe gladiators storm CU
Contributed by: Brit Horvat/YourHub.com   on 2/2/2008

Hundreds of potential gladiators stood in line for hours outside the CU Recreation Center in Boulder on Feb. 2 as they awaited their shot at trying out for a spot on the American Gladiators.

The competitors, many of whom started lining up two hours before the tryouts began, came from all over - ready to rock their skills and flex their way to gladiator fame. From timed push ups to sit-down interviews to timed sprints, the tryout process ironically involved no water, flames, blood, bright lights or giant Q-tip-resembling fighting equipment.

(Perhaps that was a relief for those who weren't taking it as seriously.)

For some, the long wait gave just enough time to finish the monstrous application - filled with questions asking the applicant to write a poem or rap, draw pictures of themselves, name the most daring thing they've ever done, what they would do with $10,000 and much more.

YourHub.com journalist Seth Davis said attempting to try out for this was perhaps the most daring thing he's ever done. However, he didn't quite have the stamina to make it through the application or the line.

Lakewood resident Nina Vollmer, who had been standing in line since 8 a.m., recited her poem, "Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm gonna kick the living sh!t out of you!"

While the diverse line of competitors - wrapping all along the second floor of the recreation center and stretching down the hill - stood still for hours, spirits remained at an overall high.

If I had been able to try out, they would have been begging me to be on the show! Not that I actually want to wrap myself in spandex for all of America to see ...
