I'm Megan, I'm a college freshman at CSU. Writing is one of two passions (children being the other) and I tend to lean towards poetry to make me happy! I love to write and I love constructive criticism.

Friends are a piece of your soul gone missing
Contributed by: Megan Murphy   on 7/12/2006

They say Friends are a gift, a piece of your soul and occasionally a lifeline when you need them the most. A BEST friend can tell when you're said by your eyes and always know what to say to make it better.
I met my best friend in seventh grade. I was the new girl, full of fear and wonder, curious about all the new opportunities I was being handed, but still missing the life I had known for twelve years just the same. Junior High is a terrifying place to be alone, but there I was, watching groups of girls get lost together while I cowered in the corner hoping nobody would notice I wasn't in class because I was too afraid to ask.
But then Dee showed up, long hippy-ish hair and all. She smiled at me as I sat in Science class all alone and said, "Can I sit here?" I was sitting alone, my bag propped in the seat beside me to make the empty space seem less empty. I smiled and said "Sure," but (as we still often have today) there was a communication problem. She thought I had said no, and her smiled disintigrated and she wandered off.
I sat there, wondering what was wrong with me that would make her leave for no reason, and wondered for the next few hours until Geography. This time, she didn't bother to ask. She moved my bag and sat and said, "I'm Deanna." We needed buddies for class pictures and we went down together. I didn't feel so alone when I found out she was new too, and I was one of three people she had befriended. We hit it off well, but then the storm clouds rolled in.
I started to make other friends, friends who liked to tease Dee about being vegetarian. Trying to be cool, I would tease her, too, even though being Vegetarian was something I considered absolutely fascinating.
Needless to say, we slipped away from eachother, just like that. She made other friends and was completely miserable, while I set off with my "new best friend."
Two years later, I found myelf kicked to the curb, just like I had done to Deanna.
What Goes Around Comes Around.
There I was, alone and miserable, when Dee showed up to help pick up the pieces of my life. She treated me with respect and put up with my moodiness, something my other friends had never done. We began hanging out together again until we got where we are today.
Today, we are twins. We are inseperatable and when we are together, we really are like one soul in two bodies. It's a joke that I received the smarts, she recieved the arts. We've helped eachother through everything; loss of jobs, breast cancer, money problems, boy problems, friend problems. We laugh, we smile, we care.
I believe in miracles because of Deanna.
I treated her like dirt; I was a rotten friend when she needed me, but when it was me who needed help, she never hesitated to give it. She's taught me to be a better friend, a better person and there's nobody else in the world who I'd rather run around my neighborhood with, wearing flower crowns, winter PJ's and big, warm smiles.
