Blog Entry 1 of 2 Full Throttle
I am not the sensitive girl type so don't look for poetry or soft lines here. I am an avid fan of watching people - you can learn so much just by taking the time to look around. I anticipate this blog will be dedicated to the countless situations I come across and hopefully challenges others to just get out there. I may attempt to use humor but don't hold it against me.

Caught in the same routine?
Contributed by: Diane Christensen   on 10/18/2007

I was driving to work today and caught something on the radio that caused me to think about how I live my life.

They were talking about how people tend to get into a routine and won't deviate from it. For instance the stores we visit, we may findourselves parking in the same section. Or how many of you attend regular meetings and seem to sit either in the same seat or section?

I had attended a weekend government seminar and sat up front on the left hand side of the room. The instructor then began to tell us what type of people sat where and asked us to hold up our hands if we fit the description. He said those who tend to sit in the first five five rows tend to be expressionists. These are the folks who will give their opinion freely but will not raise their hands to ask questions. The middle section is where those participants who will raise their hands and ask many questions sit (these were his favorite type). The back of the room people tend to be those who want to hear but do not want to be called on. Then he said people who sit on the left hand side of the room tend to sell products and the people on the right hand side sell services. He then asked people to confirm if he was correct in his findings and the majority of it was dead on. Incredible - see my point. We all get caught up in the same routine.

I had attended a defensive class a while a go (as if) but learned that we all need to pay attention to things that go on around us. To be mindful if we are in too much of a routine we could easily be "stalked". Shortly thereafter I made a point to be sure to change up my routine - I would drive different ways to work and make sure I park in different areas. I even made sure I didn't sit in the same place for every meeting.

Those days seemed to be so long ago because here I am stuck in the same routine. So I am issuing a challenge to myself not to get caught on autopilot. I will be more mindful of what I do so that I change things up.

I hope, first off, that you don't find yourself in the same place but if you do I hope that you change things up once in a while too.

AutoPilot may be easy but it sure takes the fun out of life. So live free.
