challenges of running errands by bike

You really think hard about what you're going to do with a loaf of bread or a bunch of bananas when you've only got so much cargo space on your back."
Yeah, no kidding. For the past couple of weeks I've been running almost all of my errands by bike, and the cargo space issue makes it more challenging than errands by bus.
Before I got my new bike, I was grocery shopping by foot or bus with my backpack, plus a couple of tote bags. I could carry a LOT of stuff that way! Now my bike has two collapsible side racks -- which allow me to carry about as much as I could in my backpack 3/4 full.
Earlier today when I was at King Soopers, I found myself examining the
volume
-- not just the price and quality -- of my potential purchases. I bought only one bok choy, not two. I can wait another week to buy a big bottle of vitamin E. I'm not quite out of feta cheese yet. Etc., etc.
I was proud of one thing: I made it home with my dozen eggs uncracked. I was worried about that.

Hey, egg beaters -- I hadn't considered that! I'll give that a try! Also, escarole is great cushioning for jars.

Egg Beaters instead of eggs, half gallons of milk instead of full gallons, loaf of bread tied onto the outside of the backpack, always buy the tomatoes that come in the plastic package ... I eat about 12 bananas a week and it's really hard trying to figure out where to put them. Possibly a basket on top of my head? Hey, it beats walking, right?
