Blog Entry 16 of 18 Boulder For Beginners
This is my journey, Boulder-style. Here are all the random details of everyday life, the weird things I notice about people, places, and habits that most others would probably prefer not to think about in the least bit. Enjoy reading it, because I have too much fun writing it.

Bashing Benson?
Contributed by: Kelsey Page   on 2/7/2008

Every so often, one encounters a topic matter that seems to snowball to involve an entire community; such a topic, I feel, is the subject of CU's next collegiate president, Bruce Benson.

Upon first hearing that they had found a candidate for our next president, I was relieved. For some reason in my mind, I had equated house-hunting in Boulder to president-hunting for the university; thus, I empathized with the seeming finality of the situation.

However, hearing more of this individual's credentials and background, I am a little confused. Seeing this regent-selected candidate is overwhelmingly wealthy from oil money, I find it hard for most anyone to pass by their inner skeptic screaming, "What?!" or "Faulty politics!"

Additionally, while I may not be an exact Boulder expert yet, I do know enough from living here six months and from the city's reputation that, for a man who is clearly very, very conservative, that it may be a strange fit. Hell, if my uber-conservative Dad dubs my newly-found hometown "the people's republic of Boulder," how is a man who is an ex-chairman of the state's Republican Party ever going to find governing one of the more liberal universities in the state to be his proverbial cup of tea?

Ironically, for me, the largest issue about this candidate has nothing to do with his money or political affiliation; he only holds a bachelor's degree. Possibly this is because I aspire to complete my doctorate someday, or maybe it is because I have heard my graduate-aged cousins somewhat snobbishly critiquing non-PHD faculty members.

Either way, I doubt I would ever be able to fully respect a college's president if he has gone through the equivalent or lesser value of the education I have completed myself.

Kelsey, I am back because I feel that I jumped on you a little too hard. My apologies. However, there is much more to a person beyond their education, or lack thereof. I hope you will learn to have a more open mind towards all those you meet in your journey through life.

Hey Kelsey, yeah this president-finding business is a bit tricky, eh? I remember during my senior year at DU the school went through some controversy when they tried to elect a president even though we already had a chancellor. The faculty wasn't all too happy about it either, seeing as how they weren't informed of the change. Tricky business, indeed.

I won't be as blunt as Michael, but I have to admit that you do come across as a bit pompous. I have an MBA. I would make the argument that I am certainly educated. I do not, however look down on others for their lack of credentials. Some of the smartest people I have had the pleasure of meeting including my wife, don't have a college education. Some of the dumbest human beings I've ever had the displeasure of meeting have spent more years in school than I have and, yes, have a PhD. A degree conveys that you've taken the time to learn something. With a PhD it conveys you've spent a lot of time learning something very minute. It doesn't, however, convey intelligence. By the way, what you should be looking for in a president is someone who is capable of running a business in an efficient and responsible manner. Their political views are irrelevant.

I was with you all the way to the end, Kelsey, but that last statement....? If you truly base your respect on a person's education, than I am done reading your blogs. I am proud to say my parents taught me to respect anyone who does their job honestly and to the best of their ability, whether it's the college president or the guy picking up the garbage. Oh, by the way, I dropped out my 2nd year and started working with my hands, outside. Can you respect THAT? And screw your graduate-aged cousins, they are a long way from mature, regardless of their "education"
