When did CNN turn into E!?
Contributed by: James Fiebiger   on 7/24/2007

Seriously, when did CNN, the news network, stop worrying about real news and only start worrying about entertainment news? It was from CNN that I learned about Britney's infamous head-shaving and umbrella-car violence. Today I go the website ( CNN.com ...duh) and what do I find? You guessed it. Nothing about real news. No stuff about the war we are involved in. No impeachment talk. All I am able to learn about from CNN's top stories is that Lindsay Lohan got arrested for cocaine and driving drunk again ... who would have thunk it?

Lohan ... on cocaine ... driving drunk ... what a scoop. Then, next most popular story? Drew Carey will host The Price Is Right. The fat dude with the glasses from the Drew Show. (No, not the fat blonde woman with all the make-up). WOW. Finally a reason to stay home at 10 o'clock in the morning on weekdays! Finally something worth watching on TV.

"Sorry, boss, can't make it to work this morning, Drew Carey is starting to host The Price Is Right today. I gotta see how this goes." Don't get me wrong. I've watched a good chunk of the Price in my day. But is Bob Barker retired and Drew Carey taking his place really news? C'mon CNN.

So it's really come to this ... News is now entertainment and entertainment is really news. Thank heavens that we have blogs. Blogs that anyone can write. And everyone can read just as easily as they can read CNN. You get the same amount of actual news from my blog as you do from CNN. Mmmmm. Maybe I should be a journalist ... a web journalist. A blournalist! (That's a blog/journalist.)

P.S. for anyone reading, what is the word used for someone who writes a blog? Don't say blogger. A blogger sounds too much like one of those scary things in Harry Potter that can turn into whatever you fear the most. I know that's a boggart, but that sounds too similar. I don't think bloggers are scary at all. Most of us are actually really, really good looking.

I've watched CNN for a long time. I'm also sad to see it change so drastically, focusing on entertainment news and such. But as much as we hate the media, we are the ones who helped fuel that fire. Just something I've observed being a part of the media. Thanks for the blog, James. Would you prefer to be called a blog-guru?

Glad you're mad about this situation too. I've been unwillingly watching this crap in the corner of my eye all day ... the boob tube is across from my desk.
