Walk & Bike Month debuts ‘Park(ing)’ Spaces Day
Contributed by: Walk & Bike Month on 5/9/2008

What:
Boulder Walk & Bike Month organizers have announced a unique new twist to its list of entertaining and educational events in June with the release of "Park(ing)" Spaces Day on Friday, June 13th. On Park(ing) Spaces Day, businesses and individuals will occupy and transform downtown paid parking spaces into places where visitors can stop, visit, and benefit from many different types of activities, from chair massages to yoga to bike repair stations.

The spaces may be occupied by feeding the meter - at only $1.25 an hour - between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. during Park(ing) Spaces Day. Boulder officials have limited the number of spots that can be occupied by merchants, pedestrians and bikers. Businesses with their own lots are encouraged to set up a Park(ing) Space as well. Call Sue Prant, director of Walk & Bike Month, at 303-564-9681 to learn where these spots will be located or to sign up to host a space.

Pedestrians and bike commuters can play a game associated with this event, in which they will have a card stamped at each designated Park(ing) Space. Completed cards will be collected in a raffle drawing for prizes.

Visitors to the Park(ing) Space locations can expect to be invited to participate in mini-exercise classes, play games such as chess or checkers, kick back and read a book, lounge on some rolled out grass on patio furniture, play on mini-trampolines, or just hang out and chat with other visitors in overstuffed chairs for a little while to take a break.

Park(ing) Space Day events have been successfully held in several metro areas, including New York City, San Francisco, Cleveland and cities worldwide. To see images from these events, visit: http://www.parkingday.org/images2007.html.
