Individuals/Organizations recognized for community partnerships


Boulder Housing Partners (BHP) announced the winners of the Partnership Award program which recognizes individuals, businesses, government agencies and nonprofit partners that support affordable housing and the community efforts at BHP properties.

The winners are:
·Mal Birke, resident at WalnutPlace - Burke picks up day old bread, pastries and dairy from Safeway on 28 th and Arapahoe two days per week and distributes to residents in need.
· Francea Phillips, executive director, Meals on Wheels and MOW Volunteers - MOW provides low cost meals to elderly and people with disabilities. The Wheels to Meals program partners with Special Transit to pick up residents at the three BHP senior sites and bring them to the WestSeniorCenter for an evening of restaurant-style dinner with entertainment.
· Kelly Fanno, Kids and Cakes, nonprofit partnership - Kids and Cakes organization was started in 2008 by two children in the Fano family. Kids and Cakes makes birthday cakes for elderly and others who would not otherwise get a birthday cake because of being isolated or far away from family. In February 2008, the Fano family and friends offered this service to BHP at the senior sites. Since that date, over 90 cakes have been delivered to seniors and adults with disabilities.
· Jamie Miller, Odell Architects -Miller embodied the spirit of partnership in bringing the Denver Nuggets and Sport Court together to build a new basketball court for Kalmia apartments, a public housing property in Boulder. Sport Court worked with the Nuggets and BHP to construct the entire half court with the Nuggets colors and name on it and the post, hoop and net. Miller was instrumental in coordinating a dedication of the new court which included a visit from Rocky, the Nugget's mascot, Erwin Johnson, a former Nugget player, and Nuggets dancers.

Given out three times per year since 2004, the purpose of the Boulder Housing Partners Partnership Award is to recognize and share the important work being done by individuals, residents, businesses, and nonprofit or governmental agencies. To qualify, these individuals and organizations have demonstrated one of the following characteristics:
·Demonstrated a leadership role or the "can do attitude."
·Accomplished goals through strong links with other organizations and businesses.
·Increased the understanding of how to achieve success in a local neighborhood.
·Increased awareness of affordable housing issues.
·Provided services to support life opportunities or enhanced the quality of life for Boulder Housing Partners residents.
·Provided unrestricted funding to affordable housing initiatives.

In order to receive an award, recipients must be a current Boulder Housing Partners resident, a local BoulderCounty individual, business/corporation, or a community-based or regional nonprofit organization and/or governmental agency.
