Candidate Q & A: Dorothy Marshall

Dorothy Marshall is a Republican candidate for State Representative in District 10. She's running against Democrat Dickey Lee Hullinghorst. YourHub.com asked her to respond to a questionnaire about her interests and local issues.

Name: Dorothy Marshall

Seat you are seeking: State House District 10

Age: 59

Family: My family moved to Colorado in 1987. I have been married to David Marshall for 34 years. We have four children, four grandchildren, and one adorable dog named Chipper.

Occupation: Vice President of David A Marshall and Associates

Hometown: Fresno, CA

Your Web site: www.dorothyforhouse.com

Favorite local place to hang out: Café Blue

What do you like most about living here? The four beautiful and distinct seasons.

Interests & hobbies: Gardening and playing my dog Chipper.

Favorite TV show: 60 minutes

Favorite Web site: www.nahu.org

People who inspired you (and how): My grandmother who with no more than a 6 th grade education raised six children, ran a grocery/gas station/post office, bought a tri-plex, and managed to the end to provide for herself and her family. My grandmother's philosophy was to share with others, if she spent money on leisure things, such as going out to eat or making "frivolous" purchases, she would donate the same amount to her church or charity. She was without question the rock of our family. She never raised her voice, she didn't have to. She was loved by all.

How you have contributed to the community: I am active in my church's Congregation Care, the Boulder Shriner's Club, The American Diabetes Association, and ZONTA.

What are the biggest issues facing your constituency now:

Economy, Economy, Economy! Our economy is on life support; our communities are facing unprecedented gas prices; food costs are rising at an alarming rate; health care costs are skyrocketing; and the business community is facing a myriad of ballot issues that will have a detrimental impact on Colorado's future viability if passed. We need to do everything within our power to strengthen our economy. Colorado needs leadership and policies that promote unity to support renewable energy resources and work towards reducing the cost of health care for all Colorado citizens. Colorado deserves a system that is accessible, affordable, and realistic. I believe that this can be accomplished without limiting people's ability to choose the health plan that best fits their needs and ensures their continued access to the services of independent state licensed counselors and providers. My background in health insurance allows me to take a leadership roll in the health arena. We need to encourage personal responsibility and reduce the cost of care through price and quality transparency so that we can all become informed consumers. Lastly, Colorado needs to ensure a first class education for all in order to be competitive in a global economy.

Dorothy has experience in spades, especially when dealing with healthcare. She is a hard worker, listens to EVERYONE, and would be a great legislator.
