With the current trend of fresh food delivered from farm-to-school both nationally and locally, one early childhood education center in north Boulder has been providing such fare to its enrolled children for many years before it became vogue by today's standards.
The Boulder Waldorf Kindergarten, with its unsuspecting 2-acre property filled with farm animals and several biodynamic gardens, is a child's paradise and a parent's dream-chickens, goats and the Great Pyrennes dog caretakers grace the yard during daily outside play time at the center.
The children help pick fresh veggies from one of the school's gardens to use in their morning soup snack; Daisy Mae, the goat, is milked daily to provide makings for goat cheese to spread on the children's homemade bread; the tops of carrots and beet greens are enthusiastically fed to the various chickens and pygmy goats by the chldren, who do so between swinging, climbing trees and playing in the authentic tipi on-site.
Serving children ages 12 months to 6 years has never been so critical as it is for today's younger child: connecting to the earth, to animals, to the sources of the food they eat and more importantly, being able to play outside regardless of the elements. Boulder Waldorf Kindergarten has been well ahead of its time and continues to nourish the essence of childhood. Visit
