Knudson Gloss Architects nationally recognized
Contributed by: Alicia Olson on 3/25/2008

Knudson Gloss Architects (KGA) received national recognition for its architectural design of the Keystone Residence at Lakeshore last month at the International Builders' Show in Orlando, Fla. Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the 5,751-square-foot ranch-style home won a 2007 Gold Best in American Living Award (BALA) for best one-of-a-kind custom home between 4,001 and 6,500 square feet, a Best of the Midwest BALA award for residential project of the year and was one of 10 finalists for the national home-of-the-year distinction.

"The BALA award is one of the most coveted in the home-building industry. The entries are judged on a combination of architectural excellence and innovative design trends," said Jerry Gloss, principal for KGA. "We pride ourselves on providing fresh and cutting-edge architectural design, like that of the Keystone Residence, and are honored to have received such an elite recognition of our work."

The Keystone Residence incorporated several 2007 design trends, as identified by BALA, like the bold use of color and form, wood interior trim and detailing, an aesthetic streetscape, outdoor living spaces and a "livable" floor plan. Inspired by the historic flavor of New England, the home's exterior represents a shingle-cottage influence with Craftsman detailing. The entry features prominent 24' cathedral ceilings with an antique Eastlake newel post and main staircase. The great room provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hillside while offering a large ledgestone fireplace as its interior focus. A 668-square-foot upper bonus room creates an optional home office with a separate exterior access.

The lower-level walkout features a game room, theater, home gym, wet bar, wine cellar, and two guest suites. The home includes high-tech upgrades like a whole-house light and sound control system, an 8' projection TV, a security system, and maintenance-free materials. Cherry wood beams, cobblestone, oversize custom trim, columns, and large window groupings are also prominent throughout the home.

The BALA awards are presented by the National Association of Home Builders' Design Committee and by Professional Builder magazine. The competition attracts top project entries from across the country and is judged by a panel of nationally recognized housing-industry professionals.
