Participate in Pet Poison Prevention Week 2008
Contributed by: Dr Lee Woods on 3/17/2008

You too can participate in the ASPCA's Pet Poison Prevention Week thanks to a Boulder veterinarian who recently launched a Pet Poison Prevention Week promotion online.

According to veterinarian Lee Woods, most of the pet poisoning cases he treats at his Boulder animal hospital are caused by common household items. He says many of these poisonings are preventable, so Woods has used his YouTube and MySpace pages to launch an online video seminar to educate pet owners.

"Many pet owners don't realize their kitchens, bathrooms and garages contain common items that are poisonous to pets," said Woods. He says that like young children, pets are prone to investigate and explore. Because pets don't have manual dexterity like humans, they pick up poisonous materials with their mouths. That exposes their mucous membranes to poisons, and then toxins spread throughout their systems.

"All pet poisonings are tragic, so in conjunction with this year's Pet Poison Prevention Week, March 17 through 23, we've created a brief video to help pet owners," said Woods. The video contains five things important for all pet owners to know about animal poisonings. Woods said he hopes the video will help pet owners safeguard their homes and protect their animals.

The three-minute video can be viewed on the YouTube site at http://www.youtube.com/drlee80305 or on the Broadway Animal Hospital website at http://www.broadwayanimal.com/. Broadway Animal Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association and is located at 1405 S. Broadway in Boulder; phone 303-499-5505.
