You Gave Them Roots; We Give Them Wings

Roots and wings! From the family to the future, every youngster deserves a chance to soar. Teachers, parents, family, and friends, we know you want to see every kid's potential fulfilled! So do we! And that's the reason for Hot Off the Press by Kids, a monthly newspaper full of artwork and writing created by, for, and about local kids.

Educators who recognize several approaches to literacy development will understand that our minimal editorial interference hails from the "Whole Language" school of thought, in which the more students write, the more they learn, and success is measured by the amount of enthusiasm for reading, writing, and creativity that flows from seeing their thoughts in print and distributed to 15,000 readers nine times a year (September-June).

How does it work? In 2003, the first issue rolled off the press and into classrooms all over the metro area, courtesy of three long-time friends who prefer pitchin' in to gritchin' in the kitchen. We're not only non-profit, we've hogtied our husbands into delivery duties, robbed the cookie jar and piggy bank for funds to publish, and developed several deadline-related stress maladies, but nothing has stopped us from delivering bundles of papers to every school in which our contributors are enrolled so that the pride of being published can work its transformative magic.

Do we need help? Of course. It's not cheap to have thousands of newspapers printed, bundled and delivered, and we like to have color pages for the wonderful artwork. Donations and grants are gratefully accepted, and even though we deliver the paper free to local schools, supporters of a new generation of Colorado writers can subscribe for home mail delivery for $16.00 a year.
