University of Colorado at Boulder senior
Brendan Hickey
, of Nederland, is about to graduate with a bachelor's degree in finance, and he's batting a thousand.
In the baseball world, that means he's never made an out. In the academic world, it means he's never received a grade lower than an A. For Hickey, 21, of Nederland, this includes college, high school and even grade school, as far as he can remember. So what's his secret?
"My parents never bought me a GameBoy when I was growing up," he said, only half-kidding. "Seriously, I started reading when I was very young, and my parents really stressed how important education is and they helped me develop very good study habits."
During the Dec. 16 commencement ceremonies, Hickey will receive the Chancellor's Recognition Award for receiving all A's during his college career. He also has been named the Leeds School of Business' Outstanding Graduate for the winter 2005 commencement.
Hickey plans to work in the investment banking field once he graduates, and has already received a job offer. He also is writing an original screenplay.
Outside of school, Hickey said he really enjoys watching and playing sports. His favorites are basketball and soccer. And at 6 feet 6 inches he's quite capable on the basketball court.
When he's not studying or watching or playing sports, he finds time to work as a student research assistant at the Business Research Division in the Leeds School of Business. He just finished his last project with the research division -- helping research and write portions of the Financial Activities section of the annual Colorado Business Economic Outlook. The annual forecast for Colorado's economy is highly regarded throughout the state, and was presented to an audience of 500 people in Denver on Dec. 5.
"Most students we bring on are strong either on the analytical side or are excellent writers," said
Gary Horvath
, research analyst with the Business Research Division. "Brendan is exceptionally strong on both sides."
He was born in Dayton, Ohio, and moved to Colorado with his family when he was 2 years old. They settled in Nederland when he was 3.
