The movie dubbed by critics as one of the best silent comedies of all time and the best train film ever will show on the big screen in April as part of the City of Aurora's Power of One film series.
"The General" (NR), the 1927 film starring Buster Keaton and Marion Mack, is a Civil War adventure-epic classic telling the tale of a Southern Confederate train engineer in passionate pursuit of two loves: a locomotive and a woman.
The film, which was added to the National Film Registry in 1989, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. April 12 at the Colorado Film School at Lowry, 9075 E. Lowry Blvd., Building 965, at the corner of Lowry and Yosemite.
Two other films will be shown during The Power of One film series: "Cold Mountain" (R) (2003) at 6:30 p.m. April 5 and "Glory" (R) (1989) at 6:30 p.m. April 19.
The drama "Cold Mountain" is directed by Anthony Minghella and stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, who received an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as Ruby.
The action/adventure "Glory" is directed by Edward Zwick, and stars Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. This film, which focuses on the U.S. Civil War's first all-black volunteer regiment, received three Academy Awards.
A Colorado Film School representative will briefly introduce each film, and a short discussion will follow each screening. Admission is free. Snacks and beverages will be served.
For more information on The Power of One program, call 303-739-6617 or visit www.auroragov.org/powerofone.
The year-long Power of One program, featuring a reading program, film series and lecture series, is presented by the City of Aurora Library, Recreation & Cultural Services, in partnership with the Friends of the Aurora Public Library, Barnes & Noble and the Colorado Film School at Lowry.
