As of Tuesday, November 14
th, the account balance for the Dylan Martinez cancer fund stood at $5,175.00, leaving the account $825.00 short of the $6,000.00 goal set by the Sheriff's Office Detectives Section. If the goal is attained by November 22
nd, all of the male detectives have pledged to "buzz cut" their hair in a show of support for Dylan.
Dylan Martinez is three years old and is suffering from rhabydomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor of the muscle. He has begun a 42-week regimen of treatment that includes chemo-therapy, radiation, and surgery. This cancer has a 65-70% survival rate if detected early.
Dylan's dad, Frank Martinez, an employee of the Boulder County Courts, reports that the initial results of the chemotherapy have been positive and that the tumor, initially described as being the size of a baseball, has shrunk significantly.
However, the chemotherapy has caused Dylan to lose his hair. In a show of support, the male Detectives from the Sheriff's Office pledged that if $6,000.00 could be raised by November 22
nd, they would all have their hair trimmed in a "buzz cut". Further, Detective Steve Ainsworth, who originated the fundraiser and who is notable locally for his "Wyatt Earp-style" handlebar mustache, has committed to shaving the mustache if $9,000.00 can be raised by November 22
nd.
The detectives established the odd figure of $6,000.00 as the threshold for the challenge as it would pay for two of Dylan's chemotherapy treatments; $9,000.00 would pay for three treatments. Certainly, in this instance, more is better.
Donations can be sent to the Wells Fargo Bank, Dylan Martinez Account, account # 5333316825. Checks can be made payable to "Dylan Martinez" and sent to Wells Fargo Bank or to Detective Steve Ainsworth, c/o Boulder County Sheriff's Office, 1777 6
th Street, Boulder, CO 80302.
Anticipating that the challenge will be met, the Detectives plan to collectively and publicly have their heads "buzzed" by a professional cosmetician at the Boulder County Justice Center, 1777 6
th Street, Boulder (specific location to be determined) at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 22
