Boulder County Sheriff's detectives are headed for a buzz cut as a result of a successful fundraising campaign for a Boulder County boy suffering from cancer, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
"As of late Nov.17, the balance of the Dylan Martinez cancer fund stands at $9,000. Nearly 200 donors have contributed to the fund to benefit
Dylan Martinez, the 3-year-old boy suffering from rhabydomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor of muscle tissue," stated Sheriff's Cmdr.
Phil West. "Notably, one Lafayette family donated $1,005 -- $1,000 from the parents and $5 from their five year-old son who wanted to make his own contribution to Dylan's battle against cancer.
"As promised, as the fund balance has surpassed the $6,000 threshold established as an initial goal, the male detectives from the sheriff's office will have their hair publicly "buzz cut" at 1 p.m. on Nov. 22, at the Justice Center (the specific location has yet to be determined), 1777 6 th Street, Boulder."
In addition, West said the because a secondary goal of $9,000 has been attained, Detective
Steve Ainsworth will sacrifice the signature Wyatt Earp-style handlebar mustache that he has been growing since 1982.
"His mustache is older than some of our deputies," West said. "Detective
Mike Wagner will also likely rue his spontaneous public pledge to lose his eyebrows for $9,000."
As an additional incentive to donors, a female deputy district attorney, who prefers to remain anonymous, has agreed to have her locks shorn if $20,000.00 can be raised by the 1 p.m. Nov. 22 deadline, West said.
Donations can be sent to the Wells Fargo Bank, "Dylan Martinez Fund", account #533316825, or sent to Detective Steve Ainsworth, c/o Boulder County Sheriff's Office, 1777 6 th Street, Boulder, CO 80302.
